an ideal silence... / Video und Performance in Zusammenarbeit mit Tara Ernst / 2009

„Shoa“ (1985) ist ein Dokumentarfilm von Claude Lanzmann. Der neunstündige Film ist eine Sammlung von Interviews mit ehemaligen KZ-Überlebenden, Tätern und Zeitzeugen. Unter starker Kürzung und Entfernung des Großteils des Inhalts haben die Künstlerin Tara Ernst und ich ein Gedicht geschrieben, das auf den Worten aus den Interviews basiert, und es mit den Bildern der im Dokumentarfilm gezeigten Orte kombiniert. Als Künstlerinnen nehmen wir die Position ein, in die Vergangenheit zurückzukehren und zu versuchen, uns unverständlicher Handlungen und Geschehnisse der Vergangenheit anzunähern.

“Shoa” (1985) is a documentary film by Claude Lanzmann. The nine-hours long film is a collection of interviews with former concentration camp survivors, perpetrators, and eyewitnesses. With strong reduction and the removal of most of the content, Tara Ernst and I wrote a poem based on the interviews, and combined it with the images of places shown in the documentary. As artists, we take the position of returning to the past and trying to reach feelings about incomprehensible actions.
